Wasp Nests – Do's and Don'ts

Spotted a wasp nest near your home? Here’s what to do (and what to avoid).

Summer brings BBQs, sunny afternoons… and wasps. If you've noticed a sudden spike in wasp activity around your home or garden, there's a good chance a nest could be nearby. While it might be tempting to deal with it yourself, wasps can be aggressive when disturbed, and a sting from an entire swarm is no joke.

Here's a quick guide on the do’s and don’ts if you suspect a wasp nest.

What to do with Wasp Nests

1. Observe From a Distance

Watch where the wasps are flying to and from—this can help you locate the nest. Common nest sites include roof eaves, garden sheds, wall cavities, and loft spaces.

2. Keep Windows and Doors Shut

Especially during the warmer months, keeping entry points closed helps prevent wasps from entering your home and causing even more stress.

3. Keep Food and Bins Covered

Wasps are attracted to sugary drinks, food scraps, and rubbish. Keeping these sealed and covered can reduce their presence near your home.

4. Call a Professional

This is the safest and most effective option. A qualified pest controller can remove the nest using the proper equipment and techniques—often within a single visit.

What Not to do with Wasp Nests:

1. Don’t Try to Knock It Down

Disturbing the nest—even accidentally—can trigger a swarm of aggressive wasps. This can result in multiple painful stings and serious allergic reactions.

2. Don’t Use Water or Fire

Flooding or burning a nest is incredibly dangerous. It doesn’t guarantee success, and it can lead to serious harm or damage to your property.

3. Don’t Ignore It

Wasp nests grow rapidly over summer. A small nest in June can become a major infestation by August. The longer you leave it, the more difficult (and risky) it becomes to deal with.

4. Don’t Rely on DIY Sprays

Shop-bought wasp sprays might seem like a quick fix, but they often don't kill the entire colony—and using them without the right safety gear can be dangerous.
